I’m Mitch Berg

I’m a UX designer -so yes, I design software.

But I also lead teams, and make a positive impact on platforms, teams and organizations. .

Strategist

I’ve designed products – and I’ve designed platforms.

In my most recent roles, I worked across multiple UX and product teams to:

  • Materially drive toward consistency in an extremely distributed team by actively writing, testing and pushing the adoption of design, component and interaction standards.
  • Solve the UX problems caused by limitations in cross-platform architecture.
  • Design consistent, scaleable navigation mechanisms to seamlessly link widely distributed products.

Leader

I’m a leader, and a mentor.

  • Extreme owner of new ideas:  I worked with a Product Manager and an Engineer to develop, on our own, the concept for a Ivanti’s Cloud Platform, and then win it management approval.  It became an official product in 2020, and is currently one of two Ivanti Cloud products making significant money (and I designed the other one, too).
  • Principal Designer for team of eight:  Reviewed work, escalated issues, mentored junior designers, and worked with management to balance workloads and cross-train designers in different product areas.
  • Leader of cross-functional team:  Led a team of five (visual designer, content strategist, UI developer and researcher) in design of major bank teller system – involving leadership not only in design and coordination of efforts, but wrangling requirements with engineering and product management.
  • I go outside my job description:  I’ve had to work across discliplines to get people to communicate. It’s saved products.

“I think you were well underway to become a people manager”, said my most recent functional manager.  Reference available on request.

Designer

I like to say that “everything I need to know to be a UX Architect, I learned while working as a news reporter / producer”.  To tell a story, you need to know the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of the story.

Designing software is the same thing:

  • Who is the user?  What’s their background, training, and interest in the system?
  • What is the user trying to accomplish on your product?    Is it an e-commerce app, where they can walk away if they get frustrated?  Or is it something they do for a living?
  • When and Where will the user be using your product?  On the couch at home?  In a lab surrounded by hazardous materials?  In an office?
  • Why does your product matter to the user?  Is their effectiveness going to be part of their annual review?  What are the consequences of success or failure on your product?
  • How do we get the user to consider it a success?  What does “usable” mean?

In an ideal world, this involves user research – observing and interacting users in their real-world environment – and developing User Personas and detailed task analysis.   Since real-world budgets and timelines frequently aren’t ideal, I am adept at getting the next best thing – interviews with stakeholders, sales people, customer support – and turning that into insights that can drive the design process.

Design:  When time and budget permits, I like to incorporate three steps into the design process:

  • Collaborative Design: Ideally, this process takes place with the full cooperation of business, user and product owner stakeholders; whether on a whiteboard, a table full of post-it notes, or a pile of legal paper, we arrive at a collaborative vision of how the application should work.
  • Nail down the design vision:  Using simple wireframes – line drawings or “blueprints” of the proposed UI – we validate that the design vision will do the job.
  • Validate:  Make sure that the design works for the stakeholders and real users (confirming with usability testing, using simple paper or HTML usability tests, if possible) and development.

Follow Through:  Design is only half the battle.  The next part is getting the design deployed.

I’m highly proficient at working with development to make sure the inevitable compromises in the interest of technical feasibility affect the product usability as little as possible.

Process:  A common question in interviews is “what process do you follow”.  I’m leery to use the word “process” – in most companies, there’s a person or group that owns the “development process”; they tend to guard the term pretty jealously.

So I prefer to say I have a toolkit; I have the tools to fit into any process.

However, I have experience in several product and software development methodologies

  • Agile – 12 years.
  • “Inspired” by Silicon Valley Product Group – 5 years.

I look forward to working with  you!
